I've been trying my hand at B7 fan fiction. While discussing it with a =
friend of mine, I mentioned Tarrent and she said he was a "wanker". I =
asked her what that meant exactly and she told me that she used the word =
as an all-encompassing term in reference to pathetic losers not worth =
her time or respect. But it sort of sparked a discussion. Terribly =
sorry if it offended you with it's non-B7 nature. I'll try to keep =
myself on course in future Sir! *swift military salute, thoroughly =

All right, I give up. What do all these capital letters mean? I guess LOL

Servalan and Avon are another pair of characters with similar traits, one
extrovert and one introvert.
In contrast to Soolin/Vila, these two are much more cerebral. But there are
many types of thinking. For example there is objective, tightly reasoned
thinking, and there is thinking for fun with no goal in view.
Neither Servalan or Avon do much 'thinking for fun' in public. What they
talk about is how they can get things, get power, by outsmarting everyone
else.
Imagine either of them learning about the Tachyon Funnel (or Sopron or
whatever). Both of them would privately understand it as a scientific idea
in its own right, but both of them would talk about it exclusively in terms
of how they could use it for their own ends.
In Servalan's case 'what you see is what you get'. What she cares about is
getting results. Ideas are just a tool to this end.
But in Avon's case 'the general is in his tent'. Although he wouldn't admit
it, secretly he is more interested in the ideas than in the use.
There are obvious advantages for Servalan in this difference. She isn't
weakened by secret curiosity and shyness. And Avon is right that if he tried
to play her directly at her own game he 'wouldn't last a week'. I guess
there must be advantages on Avon's side too - greater intellectual
enjoyment, less dependence on results, more depth of character.
Would they make a good couple? Unlike Soolin/Vila I don't think so. She is
too strong and too ruthless. They don't complement each other in the same
way, they undermine each other. Loving enemies is the best they could ever
be.
It is also interesting that in both cases the male character (whether
introverted or extroverted) is the more vulnerable of the two. I think this
tells us something about the writers though, not about the sexes.

I see the entire series encompassing something in the region of 11 years,
though thanks to time dilation (a well-known phenomenon of all ftl
travel<g>) the crew experienced it as something less than that. I've got a

As you may have noticed, we're getting duplicates of posts to the
list. This is, as far as I can tell, because the mailserver at
mail.primus.com.au thinks we need to see them all again and sends them
back to us. The only thing I can do about it (apart from complaining
to postmaster at the site) is to make sure no list mail gets sent
there. So:
katling@primus.com.au, whoever you are, I'm unsubscribing you for the
time being. Please tell your sysadmin people to throw out the
Microsoft crap they're running now and install a *working* mailserver
instead. You're very welcome back as soon as the mailsystem for
primus.com.au stops pissing in other people's gardens... (or you could
get a web-based mail account, or something like that). If you have any
