What were the aliens trying to do with the plague?
They sent it to an obscure outpost, one where the disease might have died
out without living hosts by the time any ships arrived.
The derelict ship they used wasn't signaling and would have been ignored
if Bellfriar hadn't been bored.
The trigger on the corpse is unclear, but the plan for infection depended
not only on the scientist in question having minimal precautions against
infection, it depended on highly trained (if bored, then surprised)
guards disobeying orders, breaking quarantine, and having no precautions
of their own against infection. Was the dead guy supposed to be watching
and waiting for his moment?
If they wanted to infect humanity, they might at least have chosen a
population center. Either they wanted to get rid of this particular
base--or a person or persons on it--or they were running an experiment.
As to the Liberator crew's immunity. There are four possibilities.
1) Blake knows his fairy godmother loves him and that he and his friends
will be magically protected.
2) Blake knew the Liberator's teleport could selectively screen out the
disease (so why didn't he save Bellfriar with it? and why didn't Avon use
it in Children?)
3) In an unrecorded adventure, Blake and his friends had their immunity
systems temporarily boosted
4) Blake knew more about this disease than he let on. Since he knew more
about the area where it came from--and about the history of the ship
bringing it--and just happened to be the only one to make contact with
Dr. Bellfriar--and was giving the _virologist_ advice on how to keep the
disease from spreading . . . .
His motive escapes me, but Blake seems pretty suspicious at this point.

Jem Ward last night showed me seven photos he'd found in a secondhand
bookshop in Wales. They are of episodes of B7 taken straight off the
telly, and are quite good. Anyway, I've scanned them in and they are now
on my web site if anyone wants to look at them. There are three Avons
and four Vilas.

I wonder myself where must be traced the sensible compromise between the
blind acceptance of What-Was-Written-By-The-Author, on the one hand, and
Ignoring-Everything-Which-is-Not-Suitable-For-Me concept, on the other. I,
personally, found that crosspoint (or, most probably, *hope* I have found
it), making from the story, which has already happened (in front of us, on
the TV screen), a framework. This framework must be filled up with the
pieces of reality, as in the puzzle (sorry for the cliché). Let’s take
"Killer" as example at random:
- Firstly, Our Heroes need some crystal to improve their cipher machine.
Reasonable, OK. This is neither personal vendetta, nor someone’s
whim/caprice (like Villa’s in "Shadow"). I would replace the word "crystal"
with, possibly, "device", because "crystal" biases my thoughts to things,
written by Tolkien or Le Guin, more magical, may be. I don't think the
*crystals* would be used in the future for such things, but it's just me...
- Secondly, Our Heroes prepare a plan to obtain that devi…, sorry, that
*crystal* <g>. Sensible plan, too.
- Third - they accomplish their plan (hope so).
So long for the event. Everything, happening meanwhile, every possible
sub-plot, is just an…, how to say…, an additional extra, may be important,
but not *vital* for the storyline (which is the crucial issue, as far, as I
could see it). It would cause no harm to it, therefore, to replace the
phrase "contamination affects everyone who's been into deep space"
(unprecise quote) with "contamination affects everyone" - up to here. That’s
much more probable, because, on the one hand, we see at the very end of the
episode *everybody* dying, and on the other hand, can’t imagine *why* aliens
would restrict their attempt to destroy the humanity only to those lonely
travelers into deep space.
Therefore, it wouldn’t be a violation of The Canon (whatsoever it was) to
try and adjust the script to the facts of the nature. Moreover, "Killer"
seems to be one of the sensible episodes, in that particular aspect. Just
imagine what could happen with "Sarcophagus" for sample, or with "Animals"…
