Actually, it may be a new slant. This specifically links the BBC to the project
which wasn't the case before. It makes it seem far more likely that it will go

That's what's so funny about it :-) I occasionally wonder if the English
enthusiasm for claiming the great non-English British writers (and
before anyone bitches, Ireland was part of Britain for many such) has
become so convincing that even the Irish forget where the Irish ones
came from.
IIRC, I've only encountered this particular example of lack of
understanding of the concept "irony" in person once, but I don't think
it's just an urban legend.

I've encountered it at second hand once. My mother was an
English teacher, and one of her colleagues was quite horrified
by "A Modest Proposal" and wondered why such an awful thing
was in the textbook.

An essay, by Jonathan Swift. The proposal is that
poverty-stricken Irish families should simultaneously improve
their finances and reduce the number of children they have
to provide for by fattening their newborn babies to sell as
a luxury export in the meat department, like veal or lamb.

Diane asked me to pass along the following news items:

Brian Lighthill confirms the movie will be set some years after the TV
episode 'Blake' - 07/05/1999
Brian Lighthill has told Horizon that he and Paul Darrow independently hold
the rights for this planned movie, with the full support and co-operation of
Terry Nation's widow, Kate, and her family.
They plan to make two 75 minute feature length episodes and after
transmission hope to release it as a feature length video.
The story incorporates Terry Nation's idea for a movie, which he had
discussed with Paul Darrow over a number of years and a firm treatment
(TV/movie-speak for a fully detailed story synopsis!) based on his idea has
been finished. The story is set some years after the events depicted in the
TV episode 'Blake', so fans need not fear that any original cast members will
be pretending to be 20 years younger than they are!!
Paul Darrow is to co-produce the movie and will also star in it as Avon.
Though at this time no other 'original' Blake's 7 cast members have been
signed up to reprise their roles, this does not mean that some of them will
not be. We shall have to wait and see...
The planned schedule for transmission is autumn 2000 or possibly spring 2001.
Since this is +not+ a BBC production (the rights are owned by Brian and Paul
independently of the BBC) it would not necessarily be transmitted on the BBC,
but nothing has been ruled out at this time.
Brian has promised to keep Horizon informed of developments and we look
forward to hearing more soon.

We went to see debut of THE MUMMY yesterday, and I have to say I enjoyed it
very much; apart from the spectacular special effects and action, it boasts
terrific characters and great dialogue and overall writing. Since we are both
big into Egyptology nowadays, I had to admire the detail the put into the
props, sets, costumes and everything else, with a minimum of artistic license
at the expense of the historical fact. It was a bit on the "ikky" side at
times, but when your overall theme concerns mummification, that would be
tough to avoid.
What struck both of us was the tremendous similarity of one of the main
characters to Vila. The resemblance isn't physical; but the female lead's
brother is endearingly raffish, boozing, cowardly, hapless, a master
pick-pocket, a thief, clever and can muster the pluck of a lion when push
comes to shove. It made us positively nostalgic.
I give it a thumbs up (but don't take the kids. There's no sex, but it's
pretty violent).
