Here's the latest newsflash from "Horizon".......

Judith

HORIZON NEWSFLASH BULLETIN - 17 October 98

VERE LORRIMER - as you will know from previous news bulletins from Horizon
and the Avon Club, Vere Lorrimer - Director and Season 4 Producer of B7 -
died on 1st October from a heart attack aged 78. Rather than send
flowers, Horizon is organising a donation in his memory to one of Vere's
favourite charities - the Danville Home for aged actors. If you'd like to
send even a small donation, this would be welcomed. All contributions
should be payable to Horizon, and sent to Diane Gies, 18 Holt Road, North
Wembley, Middx. HAO 3PS. Be sure to mark your envelope VERE LORRIMER
TRIBUTE CONTRIBUTION. When the final amount is sent to the home, Horizon
will make it known that the donation comes from Blake's 7 fans all over the
world as a tribute to the memory of Vere Lorrimer.

MICHAEL KEATING - Michael will be starring as Scrooge in A Christmas Carol
at the Wolsey Theatre, Ipswich (BO 01473 253725) from 10 December to 9
January. Horizon is organising a Christmas Outing - date/time dependent
on what interested parties prefer - contact Diane Gies if you'd like to
join us. For those of you still asking, no Michael will NOT be attending
the Peladon 98 convention.

STEPHEN GREIF - Stephen tells us his episode of The Bill is called
'Betrayal' and is due for broadcast in early November.

JOSETTE SIMON - Josette appeared as a guest star in an episode of Dalziel
and Pascoe called Bones and Silence screened Sunday 18 October.

GLYNIS BARBER: Her new film Deja-Vu in which she stars with husband
Michael Brandon, is released in the UK on 16 October at selected cinemas.
Various publicity articles/interviews accompany this release (including a
live radio interview on LBC on 14 October, and 3 page article with photos
in Sunday Mirror weekend supplement the week before). A children's film
Glynis made some while ago which we think is called The Fairy King of R
(this may not be the correct spelling, but that's what it sounded like!!)
with Corbin Bernson and Malcolm McDowell, due for release early next year.

NOTE: Whilst Horizon is perfectly happy for other fans and organisations
to spread information using our Website bulletins & newsflashes - after
all, the news is there to be spread to anyone interested in the show - we
do work very hard to keep our information accurate and up-to-date and so we
would appreciate if when using Horizon's information a credit noting this
fact accompanied each piece used to show where it has come from and, as a
courtesy, also let us know when you are using Horizon's bulletins where
they have been sent or will be appearing. You can email this to
diane@horizon.org.uk or jager@clara.net Thank you.

Except there was talk in fan circles that it wasn't the real TARDIS prop-
Andy Beech reckoned that he knew the location of all the Tardis props- and
the one for sale wasn't one of them.............

Star Wars' tops sci-fi ratings

NEW YORK (Reuters) - George Lucas' "Star Wars" tops Entertainment
Weekly's list of the 100 best works of science fiction. The magazine
says the 1977 film was "an Rx for a cynical audience numbed by
everything from Vietnam to Watergate to drugs." No. 2 on the list is
"Star Trek," followed by "The Twilight Zone," the book
"Frankenstein," "2001: A Space Odyssey," "Metropolis," the 1938 movie
version of "War of the Worlds," the 1956 and 1978 versions of
"Invasion of the Body Snatchers," the first two "Alien" movies and
the comic book debut of Superman in 1938. The magazine says its
rankings are based on a work's quality, influence on pop culture and
impact on the collective imagination. ###

***Does anyone know if a certain low-budget 1970's BBC show earned a mention
? Title escapes me....

the sins they *lack* rather than those they exhibit?
Like this:
Pride - Gan
Gluttony - Cally
Lust - Orac
Anger - Zen
Avarice - Blake
Sloth - Avon
Envy - Soolin
Vila of course lacks no sin, and Slave lacks all of them.

his anger & became a pacifist(hilarious ), Lister lost something , (I
forget?) which made him a homicidal maniac....

SHADOW

BLAKE: No effect on the flight systems.
JENNA: Everything seems normal enough. Maybe she imagined it.
BLAKE: That's not like Cally.
JENNA: Not like Orac either.
BLAKE: [As Gan and Avon enter] Any luck?
GAN: Can't find Orac. Even tried calling his name.
AVON: Oh, I'm sorry I missed that. It's the kind of natural
stupidity no amount of training could ever hope to
          match.
***
Avon was being unnecessarily rude here. Why wouldn't Orac answer if you
called his name ? A bit like that gadget that beeps when you whistle for your
keys. Okay, the thought of Gan lumbering about calling "Orac, Orac where are
you ?" is a bit comical, but not actually stupid. Poor Gan.

I meant to lurk for a while yet, but I found this. Make of it what you
will...

"According to Serbian folklore, the 'Vila' are beautiful female
creatures
that live in cherry trees. They are always clad in white and have long
hair, and they break men's hearts as they fly overhead. They ride seven
year old stags which are bridled with snakes. If a parent disciplines a
child and says that they have the Devil in them, then the Vila have a
right to take the child."
(from Alice Day's Gothic Gardening website)

Where our favourite thief fits into this, I will leave to you, I think.

It's off track, but the last time Blake would remember Avon firing at him
would be in 'Horizon'. All he said then was 'Missed' and there was some bite
in the way he said it. I recollect from somewhere that the original line was
much longer, something about Avon not being able to tell friend from foe, but
that Gareth trimmed it. (The situation was that Avon was in a firefight and
shot at Blake by mistake as he rounded a corner)
***
This is Paul Darrow exhibiting his "Dirty Harry" style of portraying Avon.
All the others teleported down to explore or find the others, whereas Avon
just went down to shoot at anything that moved. His exhaustion had given way
to anger. Up until that point I don't know if his continual comments along
the lines of "they're not responding, they must be dead" were his genuine
instincts or whether they were just an excuse to get the Liberator away from
there, but with pursuit ships coming and running away no longer an option,
Avon pulls out his magnum(s) and starts some serious violence.

I like 'Horizon' <grin>. Although I like it for far more than just Avon.
It's a good episode all round. I like the intereaction between Ro and the
Commisar as Ro is forced into maturity.
****
On first viewing I thought it was kind of lame - the torture scenes & Ro's
cave were a bit unconvincing- but it's grown on me since then, and so yep,
it's a good ep.
Apart from producing a contender for quote of the series ("I'm not
expendable, I'm not stupid and I'm not going", from an exhausted and annoyed
Avon) Horizon's Ro/Commissar scenes added a real depth to the story as they
discussed their pupil/teacher relationship, finally giving more bite to Ro's
actions at the end.

Ro & the Commissar actually reminded me a bit of Jim Hacker & Sir Humphrey
Appleby with the way they address each other, the Commissar appearing to be
subservient while manipulating Ro to make 'correct' decisions.

I can just see Jim Hacker saying to Blake "I rule here. I am my own man. I am
Horizon's Prime Minister of her Majesty Servalan's Administration", with Sir
Humphrey in the background murmuring "Indeed you are ruler, now send your
wife down the mines"

BBC show. I found Dr. Who, but that's not the one *I* was looking for. :(
