Carol mentioned, in connection with a music vid:
>Maybe one of the scenes from his
>cell in "The Way Back," where Blake's
>holding his head and looking pained.

Paul James has a lovely still of that, which I've just collected from his
site to use when I open up Windows - balancing the last-ever shot of Avon,
in "Blake", for closing down.

Which is really just an intro to tell anyone new that Paul has a wonderful
library of B7 pictures on
http://www.meteo.physik.uni-muenchen.de/theorie/paul/blakes7.html

Even if his rating system does make out that Headhunter is the best ever
episode!

Returning to a slightly old theme here, but I think it's time to stick
up for one of my favourite characters.

Really. Based on the post-Assassin episodes I did get to see, that is.
Watching them, I had the distinct impression that she was prepared to
put up with Avon, but only up to the point where she lost trust in his
judgement. In the third season, there was a lot of emphasis on the
Avon-Tarrant power struggle. In the fourth season, Tarrant acquiesced,
but Soolin only ever seemed to meet Avon at halfway. She certainly
posed more of a threat to Avon than Tarrant, and I feel hers was the
more powerful role.

Watching "Gold" again after seeing the first and second season vids
brings it home to me how much more homogeneous the crew seems in those
later episodes. Discounting Avon, who had the biggest role, and Vila,
who was skulking in fine style on Scorpio, the others seemed to have an
equal share of attention and detail. However, it was Soolin who vented
her anger at Avon in the final scene, which is indicative of the changed
dynamics of the crew.

If anyone in the fourth season crew would have challenged Avon, it would
have been Soolin. In that sense, and (IMO) in terms of sheer stage
presence, she pushed Tarrant into the background.

This contradicts the next extract:

>...Blake, Avon, Vila,
>Tarrant, 1st season Travis. They are /all/ powerful roles and
>noticible
>more consistant in their power than the women's.

When Jenna was the focus of the discussion, I took a look at Sue Clerc's
web page and found an undeniable example of a male character pinching
lines that should, by any sane person's reckoning, have gone to Jenna.
Remember in "Killer", when Blake recognises an ancient spaceship and
explains the significance of the Darkling Zone? That was Jenna's field
of expertise! For a start, Blake would never have been so rude and
insensitive as to forget this, so this IS an example of the writers
ignoring Jenna's potential.

Jenna never was a favourite of mine, though. Soolin, on the other
hand... You see, I'd like to know if there are any such obvious
examples of her being pushed into the background unfairly. I missed
chunks of the fourth season, so I'm not in a position to judge.

Any suggestions?

You've touched on two of my favorite B7 subjects...the fourth season crew and
Avon/Soolin.

I've always felt the fourth season crew worked together, lived together, and
fought together as a unit better than the others. And, although, no one
declared any strong devotion or affection for one another, it was there,
beneath the surface. Moreso than with the other crews.

I agree that Soolin emerged as a strong character after "Gold" -- the ep that
showcased what a fabulous team Avon and Soolin were. While I'm not saying
Tarrant was moved to the background, Soolin DID move to the foreground
noticeably after that ep.

It was Soolin who argued with Avon if she didn't like the sound of a plan, it
was Soolin Avon confided in, it was Soolin's opinion Avon would ask for on the
Scorpio flight deck (he often turns to her and asks what she thinks).

It was Soolin who always stood up to Avon, and, in my opinion, Avon liked it.
;)

After seeing "Gold" I see Avon/Soolin as a wonderful couple. I've been able
to find some great fanfic on this subject. I wish the show had been able to
go another year. Not only so I would have one more year of Avon, but Soolin
was just beginning to be the character Jenna should have been. Soolin would
have been fabulous in a fifth season.

I'm getting a sudden last minute flurry of requests for Sheelagh's tapes to
Australia.

If you're ordering all four of the tapes that I have in stock, then I can do the
set for A$90 as it obviously costs less to post them together.

Send me your address - it must reach me by Friday morning UK time (as my
husband leaves Friday afternoon) - Once I confirm that you got to me in time,
send a cheque for A$90 to Pat Fenech (payable to Pat Fenech) 11 Lincoln St,
Stanmore, NSW 2048

It's my birthday and all in all a pretty good one. Hubby bought me two
videos, Dr. Who's Timelash, can't wait to see that and also
Stardrive/Animals. Trouble was I gave him a list of all the B7 vids I
didn't have and he went and chose that one! I made the mistake of telling
him about the Space Rats and he was intrigued I think.

Also my darling Mum sent me two Discworld novels!!

Wednesday 30th September '98....

Here's a brief bulletin from "Horizon":

STEPHEN GREIF

Stephen Greif will be doing readings on Radio 3 on Monday 5th October at
21.40 hours - programme called +Postscript+

...And for your interest, Diane Gies yesterday spoke to Brian Lighthill (re
the 2nd B7 audio play). Apparently the recording of "The Syndeton
Experiment" went very well, and all the cast had a great time.
