I've had another thought which is vaguely out-take related I guess..
something else I missed that I heard was on TV! I don't suppose anyone saw
the trailer for Channel 5 (in the UK)'s sci-fi movie season in January I
think which apparently had Paul Darrow in Avon gear saying the line 'Avon
calling'? Had I known they'd done that I would have sat glued to my TV set
watching channel 5 (a sure fate worse than death) just to see it!

Rebels Without a Flag. Actually I think that they were about 44 minutes

Not only didn't they have anyone around the BBC who could speak Spanish,

It's true, we know what Snape thinks of James but he never mentions Lily.
Add the fact Voldemort was originally [from Harry's memories in book 3]
willing to spare her when it turns out he could have snuffed her like a
candle and there was no way she could stop him.
Then [BIG spoiler], we find out Snape was once on you-know-who's side but
became a spy for Dumbledore. Skipping the intriguing question of why
(although, I have to mention he was one of SIX friends who worked for
Voldemort [since Voldemort lacks curly hair, this is an imperfect
comparison]).
So, did Voldemort, aware of Snape's feelings, try to avoid killing Lily
(for those who feel that's too kind of Voldemort, imagine that Voldemort
intended to hand her over to Snape who he assumed had highly
ungentlemanly intentions and some possible desire to balance old wrongs
[being scorned or whatever] or whatever)? But Snape very likely was the
spy who warned Dumbledore - meaning Snape had secretly broken with all
his old friends and risked his life but the effort was wasted because (in
Snape's view) James _wouldn't_ break with his old friends or make similar
sacrifices. Snape then learns Lily died because of Sirius (or so
everyone believes), the guy he's thought of as a potential murderer since
they were sixteen. No wonder he hated Sirius _and_ despised James for
trusting him! Oh, and she also died, in part, because of Harry.
So, when Hermione tries to make him listen to Sirius and he tells her to
shut up and that she doesn't know what she's talking about, he's talking
as a guy who has seen what Death Eaters do given half a chance and who
thinks he's up against two. In other words, he's rushed into what he
considers a desperate, dangerous situation where he could easily get
killed to save these kids.
THEN, after all these years of trying to atone for his crimes, Snape
discovers he still ranks under an escaped murderer in the trust
department (although he managed to avoid quoting Avon's lines at the end
of Star One when Blake shows up on the bridge).
Poor Snape. Avon only had one Blake. Snape has two, Dumbledore and
Voldemort.
I'm wondering if this makes Avery, Snape's old pal who spent years on the
run and who gets tortured by Voldemort, Vila.
Oh, but is Snape's nastiness a blind, in case he has to spy for
Dumbledore again?
B7 connection: Lily as Anna without Rumors (and an Anna who chose the
other guy). Avery as Vila. Sirius as Shrinker (in Snape's view)... Oh,
and Servalan made a cameo, didn't she?

If you don't mind me asking, what was the print run, and how well is it
selling? Previous ventures into publishing B7 material haven't exactly fared
well, like the Marvel postermag (though I gather the summer specials didn't
do too badly). Does this suggest a viable market for a professional zine?
Does it also say something about the level of content that people expect
before they're prepared to buy?
I thought Zenith was rather good, with substance to match its style.
Certainly far meatier than your average TV Zone/Dreamwatch though that in
itself is hardly much of a compliment.
One question I can't help asking, much as I don't want to raise That Topic
again - is Zenith the Horizon NL That Never Was? And if so, why was it
vetoed? Because I can't see anything in Zenith that couldn't fit quite
comfortably in a Horizon newsletter, except possibly the Nickey Barnard/Alan
Stevens fiction (which I enjoyed immensely).

I would say just go ahead and plunder. It's not like you would be ripping
anyone off. RPGs regularly recycle well known plots, often transposing them
into different genres - Imagine magazine once ran an ADandD scenario that
had hordes of goblins threatening a village of helpless peasants, the PCs
being hired to save the peasants and drive the goblins away. I think the GM
notes suggested that having *seven* PCs might be appropriate... (That's
seven as in Magnificent Samurai, not Blakes)
I disagree with Trish - there is no need whatsoever to seek permission from
the author of the original fanfic. If anyone asked me if they could use the
plot from one of my stories for a rolegaming session I'd think they were a
total loon.
Would you ask the BBC for permission to run a game set in the B7 universe?
Of course not, no more than a fan writer does the same when setting out to
write fanfic.
The only downside is that anyone who's read the same source material might
spot the plot and bulldoze through it.

I'm surprised that's even needed. This is one magazine that's so good it
should practically sell itself. I'm not talking about the "if you're a fan
you must support this effort" plugging which nearly put me *off* buying it
(I always think that if people say we should buy something for reasons
other than it being a good product, there's probably something wrong with

my one complaint: why was that picture so small? It deserved to be a full
size, fold out pinup. I know that would have meant staples through Brian's
tummy, but I believe I could have gotten over that </ honesty and drool
attack>.
Other than that one complaint, I could find absolutely nothing to complain
about in this entire magazine. And this is coming from a misanthropic,
glass three quarters empty whiner, who can usually find fault in just about
any magazine. For once I didn't hate the artwork (I'm not a nice person for
artists, since I don't really like any picture that isn't a near
photographic likeness), but in fact really admired it. That cover drawing
of Travis is absolutely beautiful and one of the very few drawings that (in
my overly critical eyes) looks better than a photograph. As for contents:
it's everything I ever hoped for in a magazine and have never before been
able to find: good, interesting and indepth articles, lots of information
and most important of all (to me) I've read absolutely everything in it.
Most of the time when I buy a magazine, I read only about half or maybe
three quarters of the articles, and find the rest too boring to bother
with. Not so with Zenith. Everything was eminently readable, and I guess
kudos for that go to the authors as well as the editors. I intend to keep
Judith's article about her visit to the power station on my lap the next
time I see any of the episodes that were taped there.
I have one question: where were all the ladies? Even Servalan was mentioned
only a few times (although that picture of her in the white dress was quite
beautiful) and Jenna and Cally were barely mentioned at all. How about next
time (yep, shameless plug, but I'll definitely buy it) you guys put in an
interview with Jan Chappell or Sally Knyvette? How's it going with the
sales, BTW? Are we nearly at the point where we can expect Zenith #2? If
not: everybody buy this! I want a next one! Or I'll huff and I'll puff and
I'll... well, go off to sulk, I guess.

You can get them at cons, which is probably not a lot of use to you. If
your parents are around for a while, it would also be possible for the
tapes to be sent to their UK address to save on postage. But if you have

Having finally got home to a large pile of post, all of which I'm too
tired to LoC just now, I'd agree with the above. I thought Zenith was
superb, and had I seen it in a newsagent I would have assumed it was a
professionally published magazine. It's a lot better than some of the
stuff that is published professionally. Andy, Alan, well done. I just
wish I was in a fit state to wibble about it at length, as it deserves.

Now if I recall correctly, Horizon had a policy of not printing anything by
anyone who wasn't a member. That means at *least* four of the pieces
wouldn't have run in Horizon (including mine), and probably a lot more.

If you don't mind me asking, what was the print run, and how well is it
selling?
Zenith is selling extraordinarily well, however we need to sell 700 to break
even and to ensure that there will be an issue two. We are half way there
(and in three weeks that really is something), but there are still quite a
number of you who have not yet purchased a copy! (Hint, Hint)

Zenith isn't a professional magazine, it just looks that way! The poster
